Sightings of phooka are relatively common though accounts vary wildly in description and activity. While most sightings claim it is some sort of beast such as a horse or goat, some have described it as a large bird or even human. Regardless of species, all accounts describe the phooka as appearing deep black, even at midday beneath direct sunlight, with its only other noticeable feature to be its brilliant eyes. The phooka is likewise always accompanied by a breeze that continues to gust as long as the creature is present. Those who claim to have conversed with the creature insist that its voice came not from the creature but from this trailing wind.
Interestingly it turns out that the phooka is not a beast at all but is in fact the breeze itself. An Air elemental capable of manipulating light and sound, the phooka is an inquisitive elemental that shows a considerable curiosity toward humans. Being relatively insubstantial, it creates phantom bodies to aid it in its interactions. While this ability is impressive, the elemental either has a limited understanding of color and texture or is incapable of representing them, because its mimics invariably appear as living silhouettes. For this reason encounters with phooka can often be unnerving.
The phooka communicates by manipulation of air currents and is often eager to dole out advice it has picked up in its meanderings. Care should be taken when utilizing advice given by the phooka as its suggestions seem as likely to be useful as they are detrimental. Whether this is intentional mischief on the part of the elemental or simply ignorance is unknown, although considering the mischievous tenancies of Air elementals I am want to assume the former.
