-excerpt from journal of an ancient Elysian sailor
Classification: Elemental
Major Elements: Water
Minor Elements: None
Habitat: Seas and large bodies of water
Many a fisher or sailor has a tale of a strange currents when they are out to sea: a wave that doesn't break with the rest or an odd swell that seemed to linger in the near distance. Many more will tell you of the feelings of being watched while alone on the water.
True to their Aqueous nature, a Watcher-in-the-Waves is a creature of endless curiosity. They have been observed drifting just off the shores of nearly every major settlement in Ordin. Seafarers have noted their presence from the earliest human writings. Lingering Tides were noted to dwell near the shores of ancient Mensoj. The Elysians spoke of sea swells that followed their ships. Nowadays their curiosity seems to be just as strong as ever.
As a seemingly pure Water elemental, Watchers are almost indistinguishable from the seas they inhabit, and if not for their strange, watchful habits they would likely go entirely unnoticed by humanity. Though they seem ever-present at the shores of civilization, there are few credible sources that have ever gotten particularly close to one of the elementals. This has led to a great deal of speculation and hypothesis as to their true nature and origin. One such speculation states that they are not truly their own species but are other, known Aqueous elementals that have developed an inquisitiveness toward us. And since many Water creatures are known for their abilities to disguise and alter their shapes, this is not entirely unlikely.
Whatever the elementals' true nature, due caution is advised, as always with pure elementals. While there are no tales of violence or even direct contact with a Watcher, pure elementals are known for their single-mindedness. There are more than enough tales of ships and crews mysteriously lost to the sea, it seems more than possible that a few might have been the result of a Watcher's overwhelming curiosity.
